Talk Saves Lives: The Power of Voice and Story in Community-Engaged and Culturally Responsive Evaluation

Improving Timeliness and Robustness of Continuous Quality Improvement as a Driver of Storytelling

Effective and timely feedback is a critical component for continuous quality improvement (CQI) of programs. As part of a mixed methods approach to CQI for a suicide prevention program for the general community, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) has developed feedback tools for program participants and trained presenters to share their perspectives on program implementation and their experience. Using a sophisticated data collection and analytical tool, we collected feedback from both participants and presenters and developed analytical dashboards for staff so that their response results can be viewed in real-time. Furthermore, as trained presenters report challenges or questions about their experiences, automated notifications alert staff, enabling us to connect with presenters and improve programs . To strengthen the robustness of our CQI approach, we conducted focus groups with presenters and AFSP staff to (1) explore their experiences with program implementation and (2) identify needs for program improvement, followed by program modifications and pilot testing in small groups, before systemwide launches. Presenters will discuss the feedback from participants, presenters, and staff—a collection of stories that offer insight into their lived experiences with suicide prevention and how storytelling has shaped programming.
