Miriam Commodore – Mensah is a fourth year PhD student and Adjunct professor at the Indiana University School of Social Work. Miriam has had the opportunity to practice social work internationally. She worked as social welfare officer in Ghana where she worked with single mothers and street children on a project that offered the mothers and children educational and professional opportunities. Miriam also interned as a medical social worker in Ghana, a foster care specialist at the Utah Foster Care and a Counselor at the University of Nebraska at Omaha’s Counseling and Psychological Services. Post master’s graduation, Miriam worked as an in-home therapist, working with youths who were at risk of being placed out of home, children who had been expelled from schools, children who were living in detention centers and children who basically had an involvement with the juvenile justice system. She also worked as a therapist for people experiencing homelessness in the Nebraska and Iowa. Currently, Miriam is a research assistant for Dr Susana Mariscal and works on her project titled, Strengthening Indiana Families (SIF). Miriam’s past and present experiences fuel her interest in trauma, Trauma-informed care (TIC) practices and policies and creating resilience among the youth in the juvenile justice system in order to reduce recidivism and re-entry. She is currently pursuing a PhD in social work with a focus on the child welfare system, trauma, trauma informed care services, at-risk youth and the juvenile justice system.
