Associate Professor
Indiana University School of Social Work
Indianapolis, Indiana, United States
Dr. Susana Mariscal is an associate professor of social work at Indiana University. She is a community-engaged scholar with an active research agenda centered on modifications to the social environment that promote resilience among children and families and facilitate the primary prevention of child maltreatment. She has led several federally funded projects that evaluate evidence-based services in community settings related to these objectives. She has studied Latine teen dating violence; health and service access disparities among Latine children and families; and resilience among youth exposed to domestic violence. Her research has been funded by the U.S. Children’s Bureau (ACF); the Office for Victims of Crime (DOJ); SAMHSA; UNICEF; and Fulbright Alumni Engagement in Bolivia, among others. As a leader in the areas of resilience and strengths-based maltreatment prevention, Dr. Mariscal was invited to serve as an affiliated research scientist with the Life Paths Research Center in Tennessee. She is also a member of Esperanza United’s Research Advisory Council. Esperanza United provides technical assistance to agencies that provide intimate partner violence services to Latines. Her current project “Strengthening Indiana Families” (SIF) focuses on the implementation and evaluation of a continuum of community-based services and supports designed to promote healthy family environments and bolster the safety and well-being of families in central Indiana. With a vision of strong communities where families can equitably access the resources they need to be connected and safe, SIF is implementing four family resource centers to enhance family support, positive childhood experiences, and protective factors against maltreatment. This project is funded by a five-year, $2.84 million grant from the U.S. Children’s Bureau in the Administration for Children and Families. Dr. Mariscal will be also collaborating with Dr. Chiara Sabina on a national survey of Latina victimization in 2024, funded by the National Institute of Justice.
