Senior Manager, Systems-Level Impact
CARE, United States
Dr. Brittany N. Dernberger leads CARE's systems-level impact initiative and teaches at George Washington University. She is motivated by the power of data and storytelling to create social change.
Brittany earned her M.P.A. in Nonprofit Management from Grand Valley State University and obtained her PhD in Sociology from University of Maryland, where she studied gender, jobs, and economic inequality. An accomplished mixed-methods researcher, Brittany’s research has been published in several academic journals and featured in outlets such as The New York Times, The Atlantic, and Ms. Magazine.
At CARE, Brittany leads a global strategic initiative ($150K annually) to design, implement, and measure systems-level changes that address the root causes of gender inequality. She recently oversaw a $100K effort to conduct community-engaged research on systems-level impact and capacity strengthening in four countries (Ecuador, Ethiopia, Nepal, and Uganda) in 120 days, producing a global report synthesizing findings and actionable recommendations. Brittany facilitates CARE’s global impact measurement, including developing guidance and internal capacity, conducting original mixed methods research, and externally sharing strategic learning to influence the broader social change sector.
Prior to joining CARE, Brittany supported sexual assault research at the U.S. Department of Defense and led evaluation at the Steelcase Foundation. In 2021, she provided direct research consultation to President Biden’s Independent Review Commission on Sexual Assault in the Military. Before moving to Washington, DC, Brittany spent four years as the Assistant Director of Grand Valley State University’s Center for Women and Gender Equity, where she engaged students in exploring gender justice in their local communities and in South Africa.
