To improve equitable access to health care and better meet patients’ social needs, health care systems are increasingly looking to partner with emerging technology companies for innovative, cost-effective solutions. Technology solutions present opportunities to deepen patients’ engagement in their health care, but also risk increasing disparities if the technology is not accessible or acceptable to all patients. These solutions require more complex partnerships than conventional methods, and the uniqueness of individual populations and systems can make it difficult to design a “one size fits all” initiative or repurpose tools from prior initiatives. This fast-moving, emerging field doesn’t yet have a robust evaluation literature base, despite the increased prevalence of these partnerships. Understanding the intricacies of these innovations’ impact on the health system and its patients is crucial to inform future investments and further implementation of the technology solution. Successful evaluation often requires a more nuanced approach that includes collecting mixed methods data from multiple perspectives to fully understand implementation and impact and inform program improvement. This panel discussion will share lessons from our organization’s experiences evaluating several health system/tech partnerships. We will highlight how to bring together multiple perspectives to tell the story of the initiative and present a checklist with considerations for different stages of the partnership (pre-partnership, during the pilot, planning for next steps). Presenters will share the full checklist with participants and ground the checklist in two concrete examples and invite participants to provide feedback and share their own experiences.
