The transformative power of using stories to understand lived experience and strengthen cultural competency in evaluating health equity related to drug overdose

Abstract Information: Drug overdose remains an epidemic in the United States and disproportionately impacts certain populations including racial and ethnic peoples. Social determinants of health, such as socioeconomic inequities and lack of access to health care, further exacerbate these challenges. To better understand the lived experiences of diverse populations and explore issues of health inequity related to drug overdose, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and contractor ICF conducted interviews with populations disproportionately impacted by substance use to develop culturally competent communication and educational strategies. The interviews provided a safe space for people who use drugs to tell their stories and shed light on the lived experiences of individuals affected by drug use. The stories can also help ground CDC’s evaluation work by incorporating a culturally centered context for evaluating overdose prevention strategies that are sensitive to the lived experiences of disproportionately impacted populations.
