59 - Telling the story of impact through reporting requirements: The CDC Foundation’s experience in building an equitable and sustainable evaluation process for grantees

Abstract Information: The CDC Foundation is a unique nonprofit in the public health ecosystem, sitting at the intersection of governmental public health, philanthropy, public-private partnerships and community-based organizations. Historically, the CDC Foundation was a grantee receiving restricted funds focused on specific programs; however, realizing the dire need of flexible funding to support the COVID-19 pandemic response, the CDC Foundation began forming partnerships and working as a grantor to fund projects that addressed urgent pandemic needs. The CDC Foundation’s collaborative projects with grantee health departments, private-sector organizations and community-based organizations have led to important advances in the delivery of public health interventions across all sectors.  As the pandemic unfolded, there was an opportunity to extend and leverage the Foundation’s work in emergency response and preparedness to help build an equitable and sustainable evaluation process. An iterative review process was undertaken by the CDC Foundation to ensure required data was continuously collected, while ensuring data was accessible and useful to grantees for future storytelling. Including grantees throughout the evaluation process has led to a personalized strategy to help grantees develop evaluation plans that fit both funder and grantee storytelling needs. In this demonstration, the CDC Foundation’s Impact and Evaluation team will share how their development of a feedback loop with partners created an equitable and sustainable emergency response evaluation framework, and how the subsequent reporting results can now be used by funders, donors, and partners alike to tell the stories of public health impact during an emergency response.
