27 - Evaluating Culture Shift: an Internal Evaluation Team's Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion Journey at a Human Service Non-Profit

Starfish Family Services provides early childhood education and behavioral health services to clients and families in the Metro Detroit area and is an organization that has invested in an internal evaluation team for nearly a decade.  Very few human service non-profit organizations in southeast Michigan house internal evaluation teams, opting most often to partner with external consulting firms. Though the long-standing investment in evaluation reflects an agency culture of data-driven decision-making and continuous improvement, the evaluators’ journey in shifting the agency’s culture of data and evaluation has been a winding road. This poster aims to share reflections on a team of evaluators’ journey from data reporters to decision-making partners within their agency. Attendees can expect to learn about strategies – both successful and unsuccessful – used to garner buy-in with internal stakeholders over the use of evaluation and trust in data.
