124 - Evaluating the Intercollegiate Graduate Statistics and Data Science Program at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville: A Needs Assessment Study

Abstract:
 In an era of rapidly evolving technology and data-driven decision-making, graduate programs in statistics and data science are in high demand. The Intercollegiate Graduate Statistics and Data Science Program (IGSDSP) at the University of Tennessee, Knoxville is one such program that aims to equip students with the skills and knowledge needed to excel in these fields. To ensure that the program meets the needs and expectations of students and faculty, this needs assessment study was conducted to understand the awareness and perceptions of the IGSDSP and examine the perceived benefits, challenges, and opportunities associated with the program.
Our study highlights a significant discrepancy in awareness levels between affiliate and non-affiliated students, as well as faculty members, with the former showing much higher awareness. Affiliated students generally reported positive and satisfactory experiences within the program, citing strong statistical training and valuable career skills as notable benefits. The program's strengths, which contribute to its success, encompass flexibility, the quality of instructors, a focus on quantitative reasoning, and clear and transparent expectations for all participants.
This needs assessment study has significant implications for academic institutions seeking to provide high-quality graduate-level education in data science and statistics. By evaluating the IGSDSP, this study serves as a valuable tool for institutions looking to meet students' needs and stay ahead in a rapidly evolving field.
